Special Education Referral Process (Continue Page 4)
There are other things to consider before a student is referred for special education, an interview with a classroom teacher in the International Community School of Abidjan treats the following questions as an approach before referral:
What are the signs of a struggling student?
- When a student does not have any work written on their paper,
- When a student is always unfocused,
- A student is termed a struggling student when he/she is not engaged in class discussions,
- When student eyes is not meeting the teacher, no concentration or eye contact,
- Does not complete his/her work
- When he/she does not ask relevant questions in the class and not engaged during the lesson.
How do you determine if a student should be referred to a special education services?
- When accessing the student and the student is not meeting the average level of the class,
- When the student is consistently confused,
- When students provide answers that are not relevant to the related questions, they are totally lost.
- If the student is not at grade level and is not able to transfer his/her knowledge to complete the work task.
- If the student is not meeting the specific learning goals,
- If a student is constantly and consistently losing or forgetting their learning materials (not always knowing where their learning material is),
- When student finds it difficult to understand information, or have problem with forming letters or numbers,
- Also when student have problem of remembering familiar words that have been taught over and over again (students keeps forgetting words and does not seems to have idea of what the word or words look like.
The teacher suggested that some differentiated instructions can be used to assist students who are struggling, some of these ways are:
- Breaking down steps in direction, and break work into smaller units
- One on one tutoring
- Take students to quiet place where there is no distraction
- Establish good rapport with the student
- Give students extra time to finish work
- Give student less work, the one they can finish not too many work, task should be easy to understand and comprehend.
Other differentiated instructions I think should be used to assist students who are struggling are:
- Giving them other options to demonstrate their knowledge; maybe through drawing
- Recognize their learning style (try to acquaint yourself with the student and know their strengths)
- Guide student to mastery their learning skill
- Use of technology and encourage self centered learning.
