Special Education Referral Process (Continue)
According to project IDEA, there are steps or phases for special education referral process:
- Recognition: First recognize that there is a consistent need or problem exhibited by the student
- pre-referral : This intervention is to identify, develop and implement alternative education strategies for student who has been recognized with problem in the classroom before referring the student for special education.
- Referral for Special Education Evaluation: If after intervention student continues to demonstrate or show difficulties, the child is referred for special education evaluation.
- The special education evaluation: The use of different perspectives or expertise to evaluate the student.
- Eligibility: IDEA says that students are eligible for Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), if student has any disability as defined by the IDEA (under high or low incidence).
- IEP meeting: Student profile is submitted and the Individual Education Program is legally contracted between parents and school district that describes the special education service to be given by the local educator agency to the student.
- IEP Implementation: When IEP develop and sign members of the team, it is the responsibilities of the IEP team to ensure that IEP is implemented. They can meet often for discussions.
- Reevaluation : IEP team meet for the purpose of evaluating the implementation of the IEP and then develop time for the next annual meeting.
Parent are part of this process and program, they are invited to see the level of their children and know that it is in the best interest of the teacher, counsel and administrator to see the student progress in learning. Continue Reading
